Japan Gets Neo Geo for VC Today... Or Not

Today was the launch of a new system for the Virtual Console in Japan. The Neo Geo VC games were supposed to start today with the release of Fatal Fury, but it didn't. Unfortunately it has been delayed. So why was it delayed and when will they get it? And when is the US going to get Neo Geo games too? We don't know.

9/10 US VC Wii-kly Update: Sonic III, Neutopia II, NES Play Action Football

Football season is here, and whether you’re into high school teams, college or the pros, everyone can use a little gridiron refresher. This week Nintendo’s Wii Shop Channel helps you tackle the challenge with NES Play Action Football™, a classic sure to revive feelings of gaming greatness. If football isn’t your thing, you can always join forces with a speedy hedgehog or explore labyrinths as you try to defeat evil demons.

Three new classic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

NES Play Action Football (NES®, 1-4 players, rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): “Ready! Hut hut hut…” Nintendo takes to the gridiron with the classic football powerhouse NES Play Action Football. Featuring a distinct overhead viewpoint that creates an almost 3-D field, the action is more simulation-based than many of the more arcade-based games of the time. Play through four 15-minute quarters (in accelerated time) and even substitute players when your first-stringers get tired. Want more options? Each of the eight available teams has multiple running/passing plays to choose from while on offense, as well as a wide selection of defensive schemes that can be run when you’re on the other side of the ball. And in addition to viewing two full teams on the screen at once without any slowdown, you’ll hear voice snippets at key points of the game. Line up, and see if you have what it takes to win the Power Bowl.

Sonic the Hedgehog™ 3 (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone – Comic Mischief, 800 Wii Points): Sonic and Tails are back for another adventure as they again battle the evil Dr. Eggman (aka Dr. Robotnik), who is desperately trying to collect all the Chaos Emeralds to rebuild his Death Egg. Our heroes must again find the Chaos Emeralds before Dr. Eggman does, but winning the race won’t be easy this time – a new adversary, Knuckles the Echidna, has arrived on the scene and will do whatever he can to keep Sonic and Tails from reaching their goal. Grab all the golden rings, find various bonus zones and overcome Knuckles and Dr. Eggman as you rocket through the third chapter in Sonic’s adventures.

Neutopia II (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, rated E for Everyone – Mild Fantasy Violence, 600 Wii Points): Experience improved graphics and controls in this exciting sequel to the action role-playing game Neutopia. Take on the role of the main hero’s son and watch as the story begins with the apparent revival of Dirth, the evil demon. Once again you’ll need to rely on your magic compass and the information you’ve gathered to find entrances to labyrinths and defeat the bosses in them. Make your way through the field, which can be tricky at times, to search for and find hidden information and items, or move blocks and destroy walls to uncover secret rooms. Like the original, this game has a save function, a finely tuned difficulty level and a fast-paced story, making it truly an RPG that everyone can enjoy.

9/3 VC Wii-kly Update: 4 New Games Added!

Sept. 3, 2007

Everyone believes education is important, even apes. To celebrate the back-to-school season, Donkey Kong Jr.™ Math is now available on the Wii Shop Channel. It'll help you get those math skills back in shape after their summer slumber. After that, there's still plenty of adventure, treasure seeking and a never-ending supply of bad guys to fight. Good thing it's a holiday today, huh? Enjoy.

Four new classic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Adventure Island (NES®, 1 player, rated E for Everyone - Comic Mischief, 500 Wii Points): A mysterious tropical paradise known as Adventure Island is the setting for this side-scrolling action game. The evil Witch Doctor has kidnapped Tina, the true love of Master Higgins. To save her, you must safely guide Master Higgins through eight perilous stages - including dense forests and creepy caves - while defeating all of the enemies in your path. Each area is made up of four rounds filled with enemies determined to stop you in your tracks. In addition, as time passes, Master Higgins's vitality is automatically drained. To keep going, he must eat constantly by grabbing fruit, milk and whatever other goodies he can as he races toward his goal. Sometimes eggs containing miraculous items like axes to throw at enemies or honey that grants temporary invincibility will appear. Use items skillfully to help you clear the areas. At the end of each area you'll face the Witch Doctor, who you must defeat to advance. Go, Master Higgins, go!

Donkey Kong Jr. Math (NES, 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Learning can be fun, especially when you play along with Donkey Kong Jr. Practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by directing Junior, a cute little monkey who must climb up and down vines to collect numbers and math symbols to solve the math problems his father gives him. Compete with a friend in a race to solve problems in Game A or add more challenge with Game B. Of course, you can also practice on your own. This game is perfect for younger players who are looking for a fun and easy way to develop their math skills.

Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole™ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, rated E for Everyone - Mild Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): After hearing of the legendary treasure of King Nole, the elvish treasure hunter Nigel undertakes a quest to gather various pieces of the famed loot. His journey takes him through Mercator Island's villages, caves and dungeons that hold King Nole's riches. Along the way, he'll have to help the inhabitants of the island while fighting against the treachery of Duke Mercator, who is searching for the treasure as well. A variety of obstacles and foes will try to deter Nigel, who must use all his wits and skills to defeat Duke Mercator and uncover the secret of King Nole's treasure.

Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure (TurboGrafx16, 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone - Comic Mischief, 600 Wii Points): The hard-headed hero is back for more side-scrolling action in the third installment of the popular Bonk series. It's up to Bonk once again to thwart the plans of the relentless evil King Drool. There are seven rounds scattered throughout the Dinosaur Kingdom, each one filled with fun contraptions and comical enemies. Grab a Flower Copter or exchange 16 Smileys at the end of each round to play up to eight different bonus stages. Or you can change the size of Bonk by grabbing the new red or blue candy items. Depending on the situation, you can change your size to bonk your way through a dead end or to get a hard-to-reach item. And if that's not enough, you can grab a friend and put your heads together to defeat King Drool in the new two-player mode.

Neo Geo Heads to Japan VC on September 11th

We knew Neo Geo games were coming and we now know when. Japan gets their first Neo Geo title on September 11th and it is Fatal Fury. Soon to follow for Japan are World Heroes and Magician Lord. The cost? 900 Wii Points. The SNKP President also said their goal is a worldwide release, so I think it's safe to say we'll get a Neo Geo game on either September 10th or 17th.

3 New VC Games Head to the VC... Yesterday!

So, yesterday was Monday and that meant new Virtual Console games. So why didn't I update the site with that info? Well, there was no press release at first like usual and 3 games were added without a press release. Later, a press release came out but was forgotten about since the games were already released. So, I guess in all of that mess I forgot to post the 3 games added yesterday. Well, I'll post the press release for you now:

It's Sequel Week on the Virtual Console™. You won't have much time to reminisce though, as each of these three titles adds a scintillating chapter and new elements to their storied franchises. Whether you're into run-and-gun, role-playing or action, this is the week for you.

This week's new games are:

Super C™ (NES®, 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone – Fantasy Violence, 500 Wii Points): In this action-packed sequel to the popular Contra, players have little time to think. Experience run-and-gun game play at its best as you take control of Mad Dog or Scorpion and once again battle the forces of Red Falcon. Stages feature a combination of perspectives (side scrolling, top down, etc.) and intense battles against huge bosses. Use a variety of powerful weapons and tap into your killer instinct to survive the deadly waves of enemies. And if you're scared, recruit a friend to help you. Because if your trigger finger lacks stamina, then Earth will lack a future!

BREATH OF FIRE™ II (Super NES®, 1 player, rated E for Everyone – Mild Violence, 800 Wii Points): Featuring a wide range of characters and personalities and a vast, endless world to explore, Breath of Fire II is the sequel to the original smash-hit role-playing game. In a world set 500 years after the previous installment, in a frontier village known as Gate, the father and sister of a young boy known as Ryu are suddenly abducted. Strangely, all the villagers appear to have completely forgotten everything about the incident, and Ryu has instantly become an orphan. At a church, Ryu meets Bow, another orphan in a similar predicament, and they slip away from town together to begin their adventure. Take advantage of the multiple game-play viewpoints found in the game (such as the quarter-view perspective during battles that made the original game so popular) to use exciting abilities like shaman fusing and dragon transformations and help these two heroes complete their mission.

Ghouls'n Ghosts (Sega Genesis, 1 player, rated E for Everyone –Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): Ghouls'n Ghosts is the sequel to the popular action game Ghosts'n Goblins, originally released in the arcades and later ported to the Genesis. One full-moon night, three years after the battle with Astaroth, a ray of light shoots through Princess Prin Prin, and her soul is stolen right in front of Arthur's eyes. To save his bride's soul, Arthur the knight must battle all manner of evil undead creatures with a variety of weapons, powerful magic and new actions.

NES_cutekitten1234's Review of Paper Mario

Hey everyone, get ready for a post from my sister. You can call her NES_cutekitten1234. She's gotten much farther into Paper Mario than I have, so her review will probably be more beneficial to you. So, without further ado, here is her review:

Gameplay: 5/5
- Paper Mario is an amazing game in my opinion. It is a interesting game with some twists and turns built into it. This game is a long game, which is great so that you have a lot to accomplish. Paper Mario may just be my favorite game :).

Controls: 5/5
- The controls are basic, but, they are easy to understand so that's a good thing. Me, my brother, and my sister all think that the classic controller work best for this game.

Music: 4/5
- The music is good. I mean, in some parts such as, when you are about to battle king goomba, the screen shows the castle and when that happens, you hear this old sort of music. I dislike that some of the sounds/music sounds old. I do like however that you can get some special badges that allow the music to change.

Graphics: 4.5/5
- The graphics are OK. Since the game was originally a Nintendo 64 game, those are pretty good graphics for back then. I think that the graphics are original, and that works for a game like this.

Overall Rating: 4.63/5
- I think that once you start to play this game, you will get addicted to it...like me :). Yes, I definately think that this game is worth $10.00 because it is a long, fun, and interesting game. And I would also recommend this game to everyone because it is just that good. I know that when my brother bought it, i have heard of the game before but I have never played it before. Then one day I was bored at home, just sitting around and my brother suggested that I play Paper Mario. So I decided to play and from that day on, i have been playing a lot!

My Paper Mario Review

I got the chance to play Paper Mario, but honestly I haven't gotten that far. That's because every time I'm not on Wii, my sister gets on and plays Paper Mario, and she's much farther than me in the game. So, here's my quick and short review:

Gameplay: 5/5
- The game is very fun to play. It's easy to learn and there's many different strategies you can use. It has a very engaging storyline and it even got my sister into it, who doesn't like very many games.

Sound: 4/5
- The game has catchy music, but the problem I have with it is that the music gets annoying after a while. I wish there was a bit more variety in the music, but overall the music is great. I can hear the music in my head right now.

Controls: 5/5
- Me and my sisters have only used the Classic Controller to play and that's because we love it. It feels great to play the game with the Classic Controller and the button configuration is very easy to use.

Graphics: 5/5
- It's a N64 game, so you have to consider that when rating the graphics. For a N64 game, the graphics are great. When I play it, I honestly don't think that it's a N64 game. The thought never crosses my mind because the graphics are good for a N64 game.

I can't think of any other categories or anything more to add. It's definitely worth the $10 if you don't have it already and it's already popular in my household between me and my sisters. In fact, I'll definitely have to look into getting Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario. All in all, I give Paper Mario for the Wii Virtual Console a rating of 4.75/5, which is a really good rating. I heard lots of good things about it, and now having played it, I know exactly why pretty much everyone is saying that Paper Mario is a great game.

Metroid, Super Metroid, and Shining in the Darkness come to VC soon!

Using the Firefox web browser, there is a way to see certain Virtual Console game pictures that show us that they're up on the Wii Shop Channel, but just need to be activated for download. Well, 3 games have popped up using this Firefox workaround:

Metroid (NES)
Super Metroid (SNES)
Shining in the Darkness (SEGA Genesis)

Looks like those 3 games will be coming out soon!

Nintendo wants to keep VC games in their original form... LIES [UPDATED]

Someone from Nintendo once said that Nintendo wanted to keep the Virtual Console games in their original format and leave them unchanged... well then what is this? For those that have downloaded Wave Race 64, you can see that Nintendo added advertisements for Wii and DS. Check the screenshots below:

Source

[UPDATE] Wikipedia updated with some info on why it was changed:

Unlike all other Virtual Console games, Wave Race 64 was modified, with the in-game Kawasaki banners changed because Nintendo no longer holds the rights to use the Kawasaki name. The replaced ads show Wii and Nintendo DS advertisements instead. The Jet Skis themselves have also been slightly modified and bear no Kawasaki logos.

Thanks Josh for the tip!

8/6/07 VC Wii-kly Update: Wave Race 64, Adventures of Lolo, Galaga '90

What makes a game truly classic? Is it unforgettable graphics or timeless characters? Is it crisp realism or mesmerizing fantasy realms? The answer, of course, is all of the above, and this week’s additions to the Wii Shop Channel cover the whole gamut. From wild water sports to heroic puzzling to intergalactic space battles, these newly available titles are proven favorites you’ll learn to love all over again on your Wii™.

Today Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wii video game system’s Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

Wave Race® 64 (Nintendo® 64, 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): Take to the waves on your own personal watercraft and experience some of the best water effects in video game history. Choose one of four characters, each with his/her own unique abilities and style, and master the game’s excellent controls. Make your way through nine courses, each with its own challenges. If the ramps, mines and hairpin turns aren’t enough, you’ll also have to deal with varying weather conditions that can make the water choppy or cover the course with fog. And if you ever feel like taking a break from racing, then try out Stunt Mode to polish your skills by pulling off handstands, rolls and more. Get good enough and you might even be able to ride a dolphin-just don’t get seasick.

ADVENTURES OF LOLO™ (NES®, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): This was the first game in the Eggerland puzzle series to be released in North America. After the love of his life, Lala, is kidnapped by the Great Devil and taken to a haunted castle, our hero Lolo sets out to rescue her. The journey is perilous because the Great Devil’s fortress is guarded by a massive army. But Lolo has a few tricks up his sleeve, including a Magic Shot that turns enemies into eggs and an Emerald Framer that shields him from attacks. Combining clever environmental puzzles with tricky enemies and an engaging style, ADVENTURES OF LOLO is a true classic.

GALAGA™ ‘90 (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): This is an updated version of the classic arcade shooter Galaga. Set in the vast reaches of space, you will fight your way through all 29 rounds to reach the enemies’ stronghold on Planet Galaga. Game levels consist of a few rounds with changing enemies and backgrounds. To top it off, the nostalgic “Galactic Dancing” lives on to mark the end of each level. With the new addition of dimensions, you can choose your attack route. Collect capsules and open dimension warps at branch sections to take on even tougher enemies. GALAGA ’90’s inclusion of the triple fighter, scrolling backgrounds, boss Galaga and even new system effects make it nothing less than a masterpiece.

I downloaded Paper Mario

I got a bit more graduation money, so I got 1,000 Wii Points and just now downloaded Paper Mario. I've heard loads of good things about it and the little I played of Super Paper Mario for Wii was fun, so that's why I downloaded it. In a few days, I'll post my thoughts on it. So, on to Paper Mario!
