That is today's update. It's a new item called the Franklin Badge, and as you can see from the word Mother on it, it's from the Mother/Earthbound series. When used, your character puts it on themselves and they are protected from any projectile attacks. For example, if Zero Suit Samus shoots Donkey Kong while he has it on, her attack is reflected back at her. But, it doesn't stay on forever, so make sure to keep an eye on it to see if you still have it on during the match.
